Some species of this group are cultivated and sold as food because of their 16 high nutritional value. This is typically the case for Arthrospira platensis. We describe for the first 17 time a virus infecting this economically important filamentous cyanobacterium isolated from 18 culture pools located in the South of France. This virus could be observed and discriminated easily 19 from other particles with flow cytometry. Based on morphology and molecular investigation, it was 20 proposed that the virus belongs to the cyanopodovirus group with a capsid and short tail of about 21 120 and 20 nm, respectively. Finally, the virus appeared to be highly specific (very narrow host 22 range) to A. platensis. 23 24

The AplI restriction-modification system in an edible cyanobacterium, Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis NIES-39, recognizes the nucleotide sequence 5'-CTGCAG-3'.

The degradation of foreign DNAs by restriction enzymes in an edible cyanobacterium, Arthrospira platensis, is a potential barrier for gene-transfer experiments in this economically valuable organism. We overproduced in Escherichia coli the proteins involved in a putative restriction-modification system of A. platensis NIES-39. The protein produced from the putative type II restriction enzyme ge...

Genomic Structure of an Economically Important Cyanobacterium, Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis NIES-39

A filamentous non-N(2)-fixing cyanobacterium, Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis, is an important organism for industrial applications and as a food supply. Almost the complete genome of A. platensis NIES-39 was determined in this study. The genome structure of A. platensis is estimated to be a single, circular chromosome of 6.8 Mb, based on optical mapping. Annotation of this 6.7 Mb sequence yi...

Influence of ammonium chloride feeding time and light intensity on the cultivation of Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis.

This study dealt with the influence of both the feeding time and light intensity on the fed-batch culture of the cyanobacterium Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis using ammonium chloride as a nitrogen source. For this purpose, a 2(2) plus star central composite experimental design combined with response surface methodology was employed, and the maximum cell concentration (X(m)), the cell product...

Molecular diversity of bacteria in commercially available "Spirulina" food supplements.

The cyanobacterium Arthrospira is among the most well-known food supplements worldwide known as "Spirulina." While it is a widely recognized health-promoting natural product, there are no reports on the molecular diversity of commercially available brands of "Spirulina" supplements and the occurrence of other cyanobacterial and heterotrophic bacterial microorganisms in these products. In this s...
